Driving Me Up A Wallace!

July 30, 2009

For those of you who read the Platrium Blog on a regular basis, you will notice that each of us has a nickname that makes total sense… if you personally know us. I thought it was time to give you a little insight into some of these nicknames. Take mine- Jenn Driving Me Up A Wallace.

How did I earn such a nickname? I am a very particular person. I like everything around me to be as clean and as organized as possible. I hate messes and I hate chaos. If things are unorganized, messy or chaotic I get really annoyed and don’t function well…which may be why my doctor has place me on bed rest due to high blood pressure (high blood pressure during pregnancy apparently isn’t a good thing). Anyway, being placed on bed rest has highlighted why I have the nickname I do. As I lay here in bed with the sunlight beaming through the window, I have noticed that there is a smudge on the dresser mirror, dog hair at the foot of the bed, a bit of dust on the lamps and that the carpet that hasn’t been vacuumed in a few days. I am so tempted to get up and clean, but know if I do that my husband will march up the stairs, pick me up and set me back in bed. So, instead I have to let it drive me up the wall and close the blinds so I don’t have any light to see the mess.

I would venture downstairs and rest on the couch, but that wouldn’t be any better. With my husband feeding and playing with our 2 year old daughter, I know the mess downstairs will be WAY worse and my blood pressure would rise beyond reasonable levels. Thank goodness I have my favorite Platrium Games to distract me-I’m sure my husband feels the same!

Stay tuned for the story behind your favorite Platrium blogger.

My bon chic bon genre dog

July 24, 2009

I have the most beautiful English bulldog. If you don’t believe me, just take a look at this irresistible mug: It’s me, Baron! Note: his grandpa is the No. 3 bulldog in the country!

Naturally—since I’m his own owner—Baron has very cultured tastes: he prefers mascarpone over cream cheese, Bing cherries picked at the height of the season, and hardboiled organic chicken eggs. As we say, “Bourgie.”

We care so much about what we put into his stout little body because 1. we’re snobs and 2. bulldogs are incredibly prone to skin diseases and food allergies. In Baron’s case, he had demodetic mange, which is a congenital skin problem that is common with a lot of smooshy-faced dogs. For this reason, my fiancé—the *real* alpha male in the house—decided to switch our pupster’s kibble to AvoDerm, which I’m convinced is the brainchild of California avocado growers and Berkeley hippies.

Per AvoDerm’s own marketing spiel: “Many of the nutrients your dog needs for a healthy skin and coat can be found in the remarkable fruit known as the avocado. Nutrient rich avocados contain vitamins A, E and C in abundance. They’re also an excellent source of balanced nutritional essentials for your dog’s skin and coat health—and good health in general. Avocados are high in folate, potassium, niacin, essential fatty acids, and many other nutrients. They have no cholesterol, very little sodium, and are high in monosaturated fats. Ounce for ounce, the avocado is simply one of the most nutritious fruits there is.”

Yeah, yeah, all of that sounds good, but most importantly, my doggo LOVES his new kibble. I mean, let’s be honest, the little porker will pretty much eat or play with anything and everything. Because Avoderm is baked, my guess is that the smell reminds him of his tasty treats every time he stuffs his face into his blue ceramic Georgetown University food bowl (Hoya Saxa!).

Good stuff often comes at a high price and this hippie cereal is no exception. However, you can find good deals on AvoDerm pet food at Platrium and best of all, that 45-pound bag of kibble can be shipped to you directly. BRILLS.

P.S. Not sure if there’s a canine equivalent of “om nom nom”, but Baron emits “snorf snorf snorf” sounds when he eats…

Wish List

July 21, 2009

I am pregnant with my second baby and was recently placed on bed rest by my doctor due to high blood pressure. As great as it sounds to lie in bed, read, watch TV, sleep and be waited on 24/7….it really isn’t all that fantastic around day 3. It actually gets pretty boring!

Since I am not all that prepared for this baby to arrive (the second child certainly doesn’t get as much attention as the first!) I have been spending the last few hours shopping for baby bedding and nursery decorations. I don’t know the gender of this baby (there are too few surprises in this world to find out the gender during an ultrasound) so it makes it a little difficult to pull the trigger and buy anything. Unless of course I wanted to buy gender neutral, which I don’t….

While I have been shopping on my favorite baby websites the Platrium comparison shopping tool has opened with some pretty amazing offers. Offers that I would normally pull the trigger on, but like I said, I am not going to buy gender neutral so I won’t be making any purchases today. I was thinking, wouldn’t it be a great if I could store my favorite offers within the Platrium sidebar? Or, what if I could create a wish list of all of my favorite items to share with friends and family so they can make the purchase once the baby arrives?

How many of you would like a feature like this? Let us know! We love to hear from you and appreciate your input on how we can make our tools better and more convenient for YOU!

Meet Your Neighborhood Freeloader

July 16, 2009

I am a lover of FREE stuff (Who isn’t?) and the lengths I take to get it can be definitively pathetic. Disclaimer: How I receive free things may not be the most conventional, but in my weak defense, I am an adventurer and will seize any opportunity which allows me to freeload!

For instance, when I need a snack I’ll give my good friend Trader Joe’s (I’m fortunate to have one located right across the street from my home) a call to see what the sample of the day is. If it sounds promising, I’m plotting my next evasive jaywalk towards TJ. I hope you people know I’m putting my freedom on the line here because if a cop was reading this, it’d be jail time for me!

Costco Samples: Need I say more?

Garage sales lay victim to my obsessive freeloading around closing time. In fact, I have them set on my Outlook Calendar with the quickest route between places mapped out (just kidding on this one, but I’m not too adverse to the idea now that we’ve got me on a freeloading roll).

The list goes on and on. I could talk for days about where and how to get free things, but I’ll stop here because I think you are getting the point. I love and will do most anything for free stuff.

So, you can understand how elated I was when I heard about our Platrium Jacks. You play for pay! Well, sort of. There are three different ways that you can use the jacks you’ve acquired from endless hours of gaming: Sweepstakes, Auctions and Charitable Donations. I have chosen the option to donate as I’m sure charities can definitely relate to my free gift loving ways!  It’s also good for the soul!

Speaking of free things, the sun’s out and I’m off to go steal me some of that too. Cheers!

Au Revoir, Everybody!

July 14, 2009

It’s literally been years since I’ve taken a proper vacation; One that’s lasted more than a long weekend. Needless to say, I’m dying for a nice, long break – which is why I’m so excited about my upcoming trip to Europe!

Next week I’ll be taking a few days in France, Switzerland, Italy, and Poland, all culminating in a fabulous two-and-a-half-week vacation with my boyfriend, Nick.

Now, there’s nothing I love more than trip planning. Researching far-off destinations, drooling over pictures of local cuisine, making sure I get that comfy window seat on the plane – it all brings me so much pleasure.

I was excited to get a chance to test out the travel button on the Platrium Playbar to kick things off. I was able to search flights, hotels and cars all in one go! Next to trip planning, nothing gets me more excited than a good deal. I was able to find flights and hotels well under my budget. More money to spend on pastries and fine cheeses!

Jealous? I thought so.

My Favorite Part of the Northwest

July 10, 2009

I’ve lived all over the United States and can attest to each locations pros and cons. Seattle gets a bad rap for being nothing but rain and gloom. You’ll be hard pressed to find someone that doesn’t agree with you that we have some tough winters. The thing that no one ever mentions is our glorious summers. Given our relative proximity to the North, our summer days are abnormally long.

My favorite part of the summer is that I don’t have to get off the greens till 9:30. That’s right! It’s perfectly acceptable to tee off for nine holes of Golf at 7 o’clock at night here. I finally had to leave the course at 9:45 a couple of nights ago because I was admittedly whacking my ball at who knows what. I thought it was the flag but ended up being a skinny teenage greens keeper wearing a white shirt. He failed to see the humor in the situation when I explained why I was hitting golf balls at him.

We may suffer a bit during the winter, but we know how to get the most out of the long summer days to make up for it. Barbecues, boating and any other outdoor activity you can think of go on till late in the evenings. The next time someone mentions the dreary Northwest, just remember that we have one of the best summers around to make up for it!
