Say YES, to Nonohon.

September 24, 2009

Ohm…

Sorry, I was just meditating.   Some people have their pet fish for tranquility, others—like the budding gardner–have their plants to bring them peace.  I have my Nonohon Sunshine Buddy to relax my senses.

My pink “sun buddy” came with me all the way from Hawaii to Washington.  It’s part of my limited collection of worldly belongings worthy of joining me on the Mainland.  My sun buddy helped me through countless nights as I burned the midnight oil at school.  There’s something about the sway of his bald head and peaceful smile that melts my worries away.  Watching my sun buddy is like a little daily dose of Zoloft.

My second Nono sunshine buddy came ALL the way from Japan.  Even though I did the Asian wife thing and told my husband that I don’t need anything, he insisted on bringing something back for me from his trip to Japan.  The orange sun buddy has been a great addition to my office space, where he sunbathes beneath my flourescent lamp.    The real beauty of the sun buddy is that you never have to water or feed them.  Perfect for this busy working girl who can barely remember to take her vitamins!

Lucky for you, you don’t have to fly all the way to Hawaii or Japan to get a low-maintenance Nonohan sunshine buddy.  You’re just a click away from peace and tranquility with your very own Nonohon sunshine buddy available through Platrium deals.

Mad Men Mania!

September 21, 2009

As a self-proclaimed pop culture expert and TV blogger extraordinaire, I love staying on top of all the latest celebrity gossip and hottest shows on television.  And I usually do a pretty good job of it!  I can explain the controversies surrounding Jessica Simpson’s dognapping, the family lineages of minor Gossip Girl characters, the current whereabouts of Michael Cera…  Ah, I won’t go on.

I do, however, have one major skeleton in my closet.  Between you and me, I didn’t get caught up with Mad Men until the show’s third – and current – season!

That’s right, I just recently jumped on the bandwagon of one of the most buzzed-about, award-winning, and aesthetically-pleasing shows of the past decade.  A little late in the game, right?

Luckily, I caught my mistake before it was too late and purchased DVDs of Mad Men Seasons 1 and 2 lickety-split so I could watch them back-to-back over the summer, before the premiere of Season 3.

Now, DVD box sets don’t come cheap, but luckily, I was able to do a little comparison shopping via Platrium Deals.  With just a few clickety-clicks, I was able to purchase both season for under $50!  Unheard of, right?

I love me a good deal.  And seeing as how my online shopping obsession is growing at rapid speeds, I’m gonna need a little extra help wherever I can get it.

Cha-ching!

Couching Tiger, Hidden Motivation

September 16, 2009

Good news, everyone: I’m about to move into a new house! *victory air punches*

Actually, I’ve already gone through the key stages of homeownership (initial swelling of pride followed by mortgage-induced anxiety), so the next stage was focused on furniture – to which I sighed, “Meh.”

I get that buying furniture is like a rite of passage in this whole “I’m beginning a new chapter in my life” brouhaha, but to be honest, I really prefer powering through all shopping processes. Sorry, sentimentality – I’ve got better things to do!

In the past weeks I’ve probably conquered every home furnishing store in the tri-state area to find pieces that screamed “me”. Pretty early on I’d already ordered ever major piece of furniture, including an entertainment center big enough to hold my TV and every video game console I’ve owned since 1987.

But one item eluded me: the couch.

Unfortunately, it was impossible for me to blindly walk into a furniture store and immediately find the couch of my dreams at a fair price (trust me, I tried). After a frustrating string of failed attempts and being battered by fabric swatches and dimensions and smarmy couch salesmen, I had to change my strategy. So, I swallowed my pride and retreated like a hissing vampire from the sun to educate myself with a little Couch 101 through the World Wide Interweb.

Using shopping comparison sites like Platrium Deals, I filtered results for my preferred couch style, material, size and color, and noted the lowest prices. With all of that research in hand, I returned to my local furniture stores on a level playing field, armed with knowledge of exactly what I was looking for and just how low the price could go.

The rest is history! I locked down a super-sized, plushy sofa with coordinated throw pillows and can’t wait to use it so often that my body becomes imprinted in its cushions.  You gotta have goals in life.

A Budding Gardner

September 10, 2009

Much to my parents’ dismay, I’m not good with plants. Sorry, no green thumbs here. Unlike my father with his greenhouses of orchids and my mother with her pots of tomato vines, I’m an expert at destroying even the hardiest of plants (e.g. cacti). Nevertheless, I’m determined to learn, especially as a homeowner with a few small plots to play with!

In fact, I’ve spent the past few weekends up to my arms in dirt and bark chips, gleefully digging, cutting and sprucing up my backyard patio. In addition, I’ve spent quite a bit of time at my local nurseries and online, shopping for plants and gardening accoutrements. My suggestions for bloomin’ gardeners:

  • Plant starter
  • Planting soil – if you’re planning to blend native soil with new soil, then you might want something with chicken poop (no joke!)
  • A good spade for hacking—erm—breaking through tough earth
  • Pruning shears
  • Coiling hose – a space saver!
  • Solid SPF coverage (30 and above)

Luckily for me, my “starter” garden came with quite a few plants (e.g. camellias, azaleas and geraniums), but it was quite satisfying to dig in and uproot the ones I didn’t like (e.g. roses) and plant a few of my own. My parents have advised me to start slowly and expand gradually, but so far, I’ve planted French lavender, bougainvillea, mandevilla, sweet bay, sweet pea, fuchsia and rosemary. And guess what? It’s been absolutely thrilling! Of course, I totally plowed ahead, paying very little attention to those well-meaning tags that recommend full sun, partial sun, acidic soil, moderate water, etc., BUT—I’m hoping to be pleasantly surprised by my efforts in the next few months. My sun hat off to other budding gardeners like myself!

Summer Days Are Winding Down

September 1, 2009

I woke up this morning and looked at the calendar, but couldn’t believe my eyes.  Today is the first day of September!  This summer flew by faster than I would have liked to admit.  It seems like yesterday that I was just writing about golfing into the late evening hours.  I guess that’s what happens when you’re busy thinking up fun new ideas and features for Platrium.  Stay tuned for more on how all of our hard work translates into more fun for you!

I’ll miss the summer, but I have to admit that fall is one of my favorite times of year.  The cool weather is almost here, Football season is starting, and one of my favorite seasonal celebrations is just around the corner-Oktoberfest!  The cooler weather means I’ll be spending more time inside which is why I’ve decided to comb through the games on Platrium.  I’ve gotta keep myself entertained or else I go a little stir crazy!  Football and Basketball games are gearing me up for sports, Bookworm has me back in the scholastic mindset, and I’m convinced Germoids is going to help me fend off swine-flu.  {How can a game keep you from getting sick?  Easy!  Every time someone passes by my desk I ask them if they’d like to challenge me to a game.  About two thirds of the office has put their hands on my keyboard helping me to build up an immunity to human contact that would make Howard Hughes go bonkers.}

Platrium’s got me covered for entertainment no matter what season it is.
