Goodbye, Golf

October 31, 2009

My golf towels are stained and my clubs are now in the front closet instead of the trunk of my car.   Daylight Savings Time is ending in 2 days and I finally understand in my bones that winter is coming soon.   The winds are up, the rains are coming down and I don’t want to get out of bed in the mornings.

Don’t get me wrong, winter has it’s wonders for sure, but there’s something about the turning of a crisp fall day into a dark, cold and wet winter one that doesn’t make me want to go to work.   It makes me want to sit in front of the fire with a good book, a glass of scotch and my saffron colored fleece throw.

But I’ve already read Dan Brown’s latest thriller (stayed up all night to do it) and I’m not up for Finnegan’s Wake (sorry Mr. Joyce).  So I guess it means a trip to my local bookstore to search out new thrillers and fabulous fiction to keep me entertained until I can buy new golf towels and relearn how to putt.   Now that I think about it, that’s a pretty decent trade off.   But I’d still rather be playing golf rather than watching Lorena Ochoa and Paula Creamer pull ahead of my gal Annika Sorenstam.

The Winning Team

October 28, 2009

There are some great things about living in the Seattle area.  We’ve got everything from the Seattle Art Museum and Chihuly Glass Art Museum for the artsy types to Snoqualmie Falls and our many mountains for all the outdoors enthusiasts.

What about the sports fans? With the Seahawks looking to mend some of their wounded warriors and the Mariners waiting on a new pitching staff, where do we turn to?  The answer is our new soccer team, the Seattle Sounders!

Our mighty, mighty Sounders have had a phenomenal first year.  We managed to secure head coach Sigi Schmid who took Columbus to the championship last year.  Our roster boasts international stars Freddie Lunjgberg, Fredy Montero, Steve Zakuani, and Sebastien Le Toux.   The team captain is one of, if not the best goalie in the league, Kasey Keller.  On top of all this, The Sounders are in the MLS playoffs!

Soccer has been dubbed “The Worlds Game” and Europe is at the epicenter.  One of the highlights of this year was playing two of Europe’s finest teams: FC Barcelona and Chelsea FC.  They’re starting to take notice ‘across the pond’ which means more exposure for what is one of the fastest growing sports in America.  I couldn’t be more proud of my team.  Good thing I found tickets on the Platrium Shopping Ticket Service.  In case you didn’t know, it’s one of the many cool features on the Platrium sidebar.  Tune in this Thursday when the Sounders face the Houston Dynamo.  GO SOUNDERS!!!

I Feel the Earth Move Under My Feet, But I Will Survive!

October 20, 2009

Kat’s right, stormy weather in California does indeed cause a frenzy on the roads, but one thing we Californians freak out about even more is our hometown disaster: the earthquake.

This past Saturday, Northern Californians “celebrated” the 20th Anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. A jarring 6.9 on the Richter Scale, that quake’s destruction left a lasting impression on all of us who experienced it. We’ve all got our own vivid “Where were you when it happened?” war stories and it’s safe to say we’ve all been Quake Paranoid ever since.

It’s just the way of life out here, but that’s not to say that California has the exclusive on earthquakes. Be sure to read this great FAQ resource on earthquake preparedness!

Beyond that education, you should always be prepared. I recommend buying some of these handy Survival Kits for your home and/or car. You can buy different sized kits based on the number of people in your household. They come chock-full of nifty supplies: flares, first aid kits, ponchos, water, flashlights, battery-powered radios and more. They don’t even have to be exclusive to earthquakes – these kits can be used during power outages or other disasters. Consider buying one today!

These Boots Were Made For Puddle Stompin’

October 16, 2009

If you’ve ever lived in California, or even visited for an extended period of time, you know that any sign of extreme weather conditions sends us Californians into fits of panic.  The roads back up with drivers paralyzed with fear of hydroplaning,  coverage of emergency sandbag outlets hits every major news station, and people line up for miles to stock up on bottled water and canned food… just in case.

Well, I’m proud to say that I’m nothing if not your typical Californian.  This explains why, when I received word of the big storm about to hit San Francisco (surely, a typhoon of massive proportions!), I started breathing into a paper bag and researching protective rain gear.  A lifelong bargain hunter, I hit up Platrium Deals for a bit of rain-boot comparison shopping.

Sure enough, I was quickly able to find the perfect pair.  Fire-engine red, shinier than a polished apple, and waterproof, lightweight, and wind-resistant to boot (Ha! Boot!).  A couple of clicks later and I was kickin’ around town in a pair of bright red galoshes.

Ain’t nothin’ better than a set of dry feet.  Watch out, rain puddles, you’re about to get stepped on.

Why I Enjoy Fall

October 8, 2009

I can tell it’s Fall even without the calendar.  Crisp red apples in glossy piles at the store.  The smell of woodsmoke in the air.  Orange and yellow and crimson leaves a riot of color in the otherwise green scenery on my drive to work.  Yes, I know it’s Fall.   And this is my favorite season.  It’s not just Halloween I love with the Cinderella pumpkins and wacky, imaginative Jack-O-Lanterns showing up on doorsteps and porches.  It’s certainly not about the mounds of candy consuming floor space at my local market.

No, it’s not any of those things.  The sights and sounds and smells of Fall remind me to slow down; to take longer routes on my daily commute; to explore the creek in my local park.  I’m reminded to stop and watch the birds migrate and the sun rise in the morning.   Fall reminds me that family time and long-standing traditions are around the corner.  At my house, among other things, this means home-made pumpkin pies and Pinochle marathons.

For me Fall is all about reconnecting.  It’s about taking a break from the rush and pull of daily life.  Fall is when I sip tea with friends, play games, sit in front of the fire, take out library books and simply be.

Nuts!

October 7, 2009

The coming of Fall gets me thinking of cozy nights in front of a fire, eating one of my favorite Fall foods: nuts. Now, I could make all kinds of bad jokes about winter driving me ___, or how ___ I am for this food. But that would be a cheap shot at humor and frankly, Platrium is better than that.

What I will talk about is my absolute favorite nut: cashews. Did you know the cashew is native to northeastern Brazil? Neither did I until I looked it up (thank you Bing!). All that aside, it just tastes good. So good I could eat them all night, which is a bad idea for both me and my dog, who loves them too but isn’t allowed to have them and would stare at me hauntingly all night unless I let him have some.

So as the nights get colder I reach for the nuts that keep me warm inside: Cashews. No, that wasn’t a sneeze. Down boy!

Fall Behind

October 1, 2009

Every year in the Northwest it happens: days grow shorter, temperatures fall, suntans fade. The possibilities of summer dissolve, and the chill of winter is on the horizon. I’d be lying if I said I love this time of year. I enjoy the changing of seasons and I love Autumn, it’s just that saying goodbye to Summer is always a difficult thing to do. Skies turn grey and people turn inward, both physically and mentally. I’m never quite ready to bid farewell to Summer so this time of year is always bittersweet. Boating season stops, college football starts. Warm sunny days go away, long shadows before dusk begin.

I’m just glad I have my Platrium Playbar. I keep my favorite games close to me like little dropdowns of sunshine where I can have some fun and remember that the sun will come back again in the Spring. I just have to be patient, work on my high scores and take a break from the rain..

Remember to set your clocks back an hour on November 1st.
